Gill Scott Heron is a story I honestly can't believe isn't more known but if you only know Gill through his famous quotes/aesthetic. A man whose words represented the hopes, struggles, and feelings of so many, today we briefly dive in. Growing up in Chicago in the 1950s with 7 brothers, Gill's view of segregation as-well as the overall tides of culture would drive him to step into the true role of a writer and even somewhat of a spokesperson even though he would only see himself as a musician. (Specifically, he referred to himself as a "bluesologist" his own term for "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues".) His ability to blend his poetry and music with social critique was something completely new in culture and led him to be described as the "godfaather of rap" and has been credited as such by pretty much every one of your favorite legendary rappers from MF DOOM, Blackstar, and Dr. Dre to Common, Most Def and Kanye. All of this from a kid who's first piano was from the trash dump and a background that offered little to no success, he changed the course of music and social activism as a whole through an entire life dedicated to creating the change he hoped to see in the world.
